PREFACE

On the initiative of the European Committee of the International Council for Education of People with Visual Impairment (ICEVI) a workshop on the training of special teachers of the visually impaired was held between 22 and 25 March 1997 in Budapest.

Invitations to participate in the workshop had been sent out to 28 European countries, 26 of which accepted the invitation. Participants from 4 countries could, for various reasons, not attend the workshop, so ultimately 22 countries were represented at the workshop.

We would like to share the outcomes of this workshop with others; hence this publication. This publication would not have been possible without the reports on the different group discussions which were made by Mrs Mirela Arion, Mrs Gerti Jaritz, Mrs Mira Tzetkova and Mrs Maria Venhuizen. I would like to thank them for their efforts. I would also like to thank Mrs Jolien Jarrett-Leest preparing this report for printing.

We sincerely hope that this report will be used as a discussion paper by lecturers and students of teacher training colleges/universities for special education and that as a result the training of special teachers of the visually impaired throughout Europe will be better attuned to the special needs of children and young people with a visual impairment.
