7. Invitation and programme

Invitation

Cooperation between European education programmes for ADL-instructors Time and place: April 26-28, 2001, Copenhagen, Denmark Purpose: At the 7th European Seminar on Education of O&M Instructors in Budapest in November 1999, it was decided that the ongoing European cooperation promoted at these seminars should also include the training of ADL-instructors (instructors in Activities of Daily Living). The main reason for this was that in many European countries, the two disciplines are taught within the same training programme. In order to establish a fruitful cooperation, it is necessary to develop an overview of the existing initiatives and programmes in Europe. The Budapest seminar therefore decided that the first step in a cooperation would be a meeting between representatives from each of the existing recognised and formalised European training programmes. This meeting would aim to clarify the situation in terms of training in the individual countries and to uncover how the concept of ADL is defined in the various countries. This work would then form the basis for future cooperation with the involvement of all interested European partners. The Institute for the Blind and Partially Sighted (Denmark) agreed to arrange this meeting together with the Visual Information Knowledge Centre (Denmark). Expected outcome: The focus of the meeting is the preparation of future activities. It is therefore not a goal in itself to have as large a representation as possible. What is important is to put together a working group to prepare the future work, including the groundwork for a larger seminar. This is why participation is limited to one representative of each of the recognised and formalised education programmes for ADL-instructors in Europe. The meeting is expected to result in a (preliminary) 1) definition of ADL in a European context 2) identification of countries, organisations and schools or colleges that offer formal training of ADL-instructors 3) data on the duration and scope of the training programmes for ADL-instructors 4) preparation of a seminar on ADL in a European context as part of the 8th European Seminar on Education of O&M Instructors.
