3rd Workshop on Training of Teachers of the Visually Impaired in Europe,
Warsaw, Poland, 3 - 6 April 2002
by mrs Jelena Mazurkievic and mr Zoran Igic
In Yugoslavia there is integration in mainstream schools for already 20 years. Further develoments depends on the reformation of the entire educational system, which will take place in near future.
For the time being there are about 35 successful blind and v.i. pupils integrated in mainstream schools. They and their families are supported by specialists, working in the Special School for V.I. Children and by the Centres of the Association of the Blind.
One of the tasks of the Special School is to prepare the social and cultural environment for this process and to raise financial support.
In this context provisions for Early Intervention need to be more developed, so that they can prepare the visual impaired children and their families for mainstream education.
The idea is, that the actual Boarding School for children with visual impairment should be turned into a Resource Centre.
The staff of the school try to collect experience from other countries for the preparation of a solid integration/inclusion plan.
