Support for University Students with a Visual Impairment in Poland

All universities in Poland are required by law to ensure that students with special needs are not discriminated against and receive support enabling them to participate in the education process on a par with their sighted peers. The basic forms of support include extended time limit for exams and the right to receive examination papers in accessible format. Since not all universities and colleges of higher education have the necessary access technology, in some (less and less frequent) cases students who cannot access print material are offered an opportunity to choose oral form exams or receive help from a personal assistant. Some universities offer access to the ABC - Academic Digital Library based at the University of Warsaw.

WARSAW - The Maria Grzegorzewska Academy of Special Education

The Academy of Special Education in Warsaw is the only university in Poland offering courses specifically devoted to education and rehabilitation of learners with a visual impairment. Courses offered in other universities focus on special needs, with visual impairment being just one component of a more general programme.

WARSAW - UKSW - Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University

BA level: Typhlopedagogy and pedagogy of persons with intellectual disability.
Graduates receive sound knowledge in the area of general pedagogy, psychology, sociology and philosophy as necessary background for understanding the social and cultural context of education and therapy.
Postgraduate studies:
Typhlopedagogy and pedagogy of persons with intellectual disability.
The course offers additional qualifications in supporting education and rehabilitation of children and young persons with visual and intellectual disability following inclusive education programmes in mainstream, integrated as well as in special schools.

LUBLIN - UMCS Maria Curie University

BA level: Education and rehabilitation of persons with sensory impairment (visual and hearing impairment) and early intervention (early support of development of children)
The course prepares students for work with persons who are blind or have low vision in kindergartens and schools in both inclusive education and in special schools and in rehabilitation centres. Graduates receive qualifications in evaluation of functioning of children with a wide spectrum of special needs, in constructing individual educational programmes, therapy, rehabilitation and in special needs education methodology.
